Counselling for Teenagers: Life After HSC
Hills District, Sydney, and Australia-wide
Is your teen unsure of what’s next after HSC?
Teenage years can be a confusing time. At this life stage, teens are highly malleable as they start to form their sense of identity. Teenagers start to think about “who am I?” outside of family relationships. Other than navigating the landscape of peer relationships and the early onset of romantic relationships, teenagers approaching HSC in Hills District, Sydney also start to think of what’s next after HSC.
Options on what to do after HSC
Different teens have different values and goals. Some teenagers prefer going to local universities, such as University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, or University of Technology Sydney. Other teens prefer to join TAFE and learn in a more practical & hands-on way. There are also teens who are eager to jump straight into paid opportunities and apprenticeships — to learn on the go. Yet some others choose to pursue opportunities abroad, which can look like studying in a foreign country or taking a gap year of travelling while working.
There are no right or wrong pathway for what to do after HSC. However, the seemingly endless choices and opportunities may feel daunting for teenagers. Even when they have decided to pursue a certain path, such as studying at a local university in Sydney, they still need to decide which major, or whether to take a double degree or honours. It may feel overwhelming for teenagers to make these big decisions.
An invitation to turn inwards to find the answers
In Clarity Counselling, I don’t offer traditional career counselling methods of tests and assessments. What I do offer is a space for your teen to slow down and tune in to their inner knowing. I start with where your teen is at — whether they are totally confused of the right next step, have a small inkling on what to do, or are trying to decide between two equally exciting options, all are welcome. From there, I work with the present moment to guide your teen in discerning what feels true for them and what doesn’t.
For example, at some point in your teen’s journey, there might be an emergence of what feels right but also scary to pursue. In this case, I might gently hold space for the scared part as we unearth its wisdom, and support your teen in letting go of what no longer serves them; or I might encourage your teen to lean towards the essence of what feels right and dial in on the embodied experience of their inner knowing. What I offer is not set in stone, as it depends on what feels suitable in the moment.
I work in a holistic way, facilitating the mind-body-spirit connection as a whole Self. This includes listening to bodily sensations, using metaphors and imagery, as well as honouring emergent emotions.
If your teen seems overwhelmed, I gently guide them back towards regulation, anchored in the present moment. I aim to finish each session with your teen in a grounded and relaxed state, feeling hopeful and confident about themselves and their future.
